As well as the shipping and fishing traffic, there are plenty of UFOs in the in the North Atlantic for the leaders of the Vendée Globe to look out for as they approach the finish. They will need their fare share of luck, but cannot of expected to have to worry about it all in one object.

The leaders have been warned by race direction about an opportunistic ‘art’ project by Max Mulhern, who launched two ‘Aqua Dice’ into the sea from Gran Canaria in the Canaries on December 12.

The two dice said to be 16m cubed, with watertight compartments inside to float, have drifted west in the wind but their last recorded positions were on January 16.

One cube was at N31o 10’06’’ W34o 57’16’’ and the other at N29o 35’38’’ and W32o 32’44’’.

But the two parts of the installation, also, somewhat bizarrely called the ‘Greatest Floating Craps Game On Earth’, were floating at 50 miles a day and could have been blown north west towards the leaders.

Sailors often talk about ‘rolling the dice’ in races, as they assess the weather and their possible routes. This would be the unluckiest of UFO collisions.
